Blast from the Past: The world's first flying courier- The pigeon, how did they operate?

Most of us belong to an era, which never saw this phenomenon of Pigeon post, except maybe in movies. Pigeon post is defined as the usage of homing pigeons, which are specifically bred for its ability to return home, by finding its way back even over long distances. Homing pigeons were trained by first sending the pigeon to the person who would be sending a message to you. This way when someone needed to send a message they would attach the message to the pigeon and the bird would promptly fly back to its home (your house). Messenger pigeons always worked unidirectional, and they followed one rule: “they always fly home.”

At present, and today, physical distances are not a great deal, shipping is made simpler and planned and operable all via a computer. Most international courier services or international parcel delivery services companies in USA carry out large-scale international shipping day after day. Parcels are of many types and the parcel or courier that has to be delivered could be an express delivery or an international delivery. Whether it is a courier from USA to India, a parcel to India from USA, a courier to Europe from US, at the base of it, a courier company should be able to provide good international shipping prices so customers’ are motivated. Unlike pigeon mail, courier companies today have to be well-rounded with good tie-ups with third party logistics, neat international logistics services and logistics distribution all complete with a large fulfillment warehouse with well-managed trucking services, all working in tandem to deliver a parcel in time within and outside of the US.

Although science and new methods have made communication spanning miles a simpler process, it is fascinating to consider that a bird was bred specifically to deliver important messages and notes and was efficiently put to use in the early 1900s.
